I still get asked how my mom is doing on a regular basis, which I appreciate more than anyone will ever know. I've never really put into perspective what she has gone through. Literally, she has been fighting this her WHOLE life. She was first diagnosed with Colon Cancer as a teenager and has battled it off and on ever since.
Countless scopes and colonoscopies, multiple surgeries and now on year two of chemo treatments. That's just the big picture, scale it down a notch and that's thousands of needles and blood drawn. Hundreds of hours meeting with doctors being poked and prodded. That's not even getting into the emotional toll it has to have on her. But, like i've said before I have never, not once heard her complain about her situation. She has always tackled it head-on with a positive attitude and matter of fact. I admire that about her, The Strongest Woman I know.
A few weeks ago things were not okay. She was sick with an infection brought on by chemo, low blood counts, fever and had mouth sores the caused her to not eat or drink much of anything (which she needs to do!). Thankfully she avoided the hospital with 3 days of fluid infusions and 2 shots of a white count booster and is feeling better. They halted her chemo treatments.
Tomorrow she and GAL (my moms sister-Great Aunt Linda to Pres) are headed back to MD Anderson for a check up with an upper endoscopy, blood work, petscan and dr. visit. This requires a 4 night stay in Houston and anesthesia. She has pesky cancerous cells that just want to hang out. We are hoping for no new growth and that the chemo has done it's job to diminish if not get rid of them. If you are the praying type, say one for her. If not, just be thinking about her this week.
