Sleep has not been an issue for Presley until recently. She will not stay asleep through the night anymore and since she was sleeping in our room one of us was always up with her. Sometimes she is hungry but sometimes she's just awake. We lay her on one of our chest's until she goes to sleep and once we put her back down she is up again a few hours later. Eventually we are so tired that she just ends up sleeping in bed with us for the last 2 hours before our alarms go off. Which I hate doing. We started putting her to bed in her crib last week but since we were in Southlake last weekend her schedule is all out of whack.
I have been against "crying it out" since day one. It breaks my heart to listen to her cry and scream, I end up crying with her. And up until now it was what worked for us. But is that really the only option we have to sleep train her? She has no problem going down and being asleep...it's in the middle of the night when she wakes up and won't go back to sleep. Most of the time she won't take her paci. It's getting to the point where Zane and I both are losing sleep and can't function. I'm sure eventually I will be ok with the whole "cry it out" thing but at 2am listening to 30+ minutes of a screaming baby isn't my ideal way of helping her learn how to go back to sleep.
So mom's out there, have any tips of how to get Presley to sleep through the night in her crib? Maybe it's just a new phase for her but as a parent you can only take so much before you give in to anything just to get a few hours of sleep.
Another thing, I know all moms think about it but my fear of SIDS is greater now that Presley is sleeping in her crib. We removed her big, adorable, fluffy bumper (that she loves to snuggle up to during naps) and put on a "breathable bumper" that has no cushion. Does anyone else have one of these? I'm not sure if it really makes a difference or not. Do you guys use bumpers? If they are so dangerous why do they sell them? Just curious what other moms do and think. Thanks for any input you have!

1. We have a breathable bumper and it's just fine. We have it because Preslie loved to hang her limbs out of her crib and would then get stuck. Also because we have an avid climber, and have had one since she could crawl. She would use her bumpers to climb up the side of the crib.
2. On crying it out, just remember, that NO MOTHER WANTS to let their child cry it out. EVERYONE would chose to NOT have to hear their child cry it out EVER. Mothers who do use the cry it out method don't do it because they are lazy or do not care, they do it because they have no other choice. Many women are so highly opinionated on this topic that they become too narrow-minded to see understand both sides. Some children will continue crying while being rocked, or while laying next to their parent in bed; what choice are these parents left with? In the end, you, as the parent, need to make your own decision and not listen to what anyone else says. Only YOU know what is best. If it is best for you and your child to co-sleep, then do it by all means--it's your child, no one else's. If it is more important that your child learns to soothe herself back to sleep and develop sleep habits when they are still young and will not remember crying it out, then use that method. At the end of the day, no matter what method you choose, there will be a point where you will need to sleep train your child, whether they are seven months or two years.
There is no wrong answer--it's how you chose to parent. ;)
Of course I don't know about the crying it out part yet, but as far as bumpers....
We have the breathable ones too. Our OB AND Pediatrician recommended them, as well as the leaders in our Preparation for Parenthood class. They might not be cute, and they might not be cuddly, but think of the safety of your baby. That's what we were told. You don't want to doubt yourself later, so use the safe "bumpers". I hope that Presley's sleep issues get worked out soon for you guys. Is she in a growth spurt maybe? Teething? I hope you get sleep soon!
Hang in there! I can't offer advice personally, obviously, but my friends swear by The Baby Whisperer. You might check that out!
